Question: Why does my child listen to you but she won't listen to me? |
|
This is an age old phenomenon. One possible answer is that the child wants to listen and believes that if he/she doesn't listen, consistent consequences will occur. Or, they want to listen because they believe that they get to be in gymnastics and dont have to be in gymnastics.
Example: When the parent says to a child, "Anna, would you like to do gymnastics?" Anna says, "Yes." Anna thinks she gets to do something because it was her own decision. What do you think Anna will say if the parent says, "Anna, you have to take gymnasts." Most people I know that are told over and over they have to do something usually get to the point they dont want to do whatever that something is. Psychology 101. There are some great articles in the Articles section of the For Parents section in the Member Services area of USA Gymnastics Website. Check it out.
