The 2010 Future Star Camp was again held in beautiful Lake Placid, New York at the US Olympic Training Center. Thirty gymnasts were invited to this year's camp that took place September 14th-18th.
The staff this year was lead by Brooke Bushnell Toohey, Future Star Coordinator. The instructors were Iliana Ivanova, Youth Olympic Coach, Mila Harty, US National Team Coach, Mary Sanders, 2004 US Olympian and Sonya Yankova, US National Team Ballet coach. Each year the depth of talent seems to be increasing. Gymnasts worked very hard this year, which was appreciated by all the staff. We again kept our focus on basic technique with the body and equipment. The staff also taught the warm-up presented by the foreign guest staff at the Youth Elite Squad camp. It was very difficult but the gymnasts were up for the challenge! Mary also taught dance each day which was loved by all the gymnasts. At the end of the camp they performed the routine for all the staff, coaches and parents!
Training included two practices a day. Each night Mary did activities with the girls. They reflected on the day and wrote in their journals and did arts and craft projects.
The Future Star camp was again successful and everyone seemed to leave with sore muscles, better technique, new friends and smiles on their faces! This wonderful opportunity was appreciated by everyone, and we hope to continue to grow and improve the Future Star program and the young gymnasts in the United States. Thank you to all the staff for their inspiring and dedicated work. We hope to see you all next year. Good luck to everyone for a successful 2011 competition season!
