"The entire Temple community is saddened by the loss of Ken Anderson," said Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw. "He was a special man, who gave so much of himself to Temple Athletics. Our hearts are with his family at this time."
"Ken touched the lives of so many young women during his time at Temple," said current Temple coach Aaron Murphy, who served as an assistant to Anderson for four seasons. "He was, and is, Temple women's gymnastics. He will be greatly missed."
During his 21-year tenure as Temple's women's gymnastics coach, Anderson directed seven teams to the NCAA Regionals, with his 1992 Owl team advancing to the one NCAA Championships. The all-time winningest women's gymnastics coach in school history, he also guided five Temple teams to the USA Gymnastics National Championships and a school record 235 wins. His 1988-89 and 1991-92 squads posted identical 20-6 won-loss records, the most wins for an Owl team. Anderson earned numerous accolades as a head coach, including Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1987 and 1992. He also earned the NCAA Northeast Regional Coach of the Year award in 1989.
Anderson began his coaching career as the Southern Connecticut State women's gymnastics assistant coach. After three years he moved on to Massachusetts, where he served as an assistant for two seasons before accepting the head coaching position for the women's gymnastics team. The Minutewomen compiled an 11-2 and a 10-6 record under Anderson and were runner-ups at the 1983 A-10 Championships. A two-time All-American gymnast at Southern Connecticut, Anderson graduated in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in sociology. He received a master's of science degree in urban education from Southern Connecticut in 1982.
