Dalton said he has always enjoyed fashion, critiquing clothes he sees with a vision of how he could improve them. Early this summer, the World medalist made his vision into a reality.
"I wanted something that had to do with athletics," Dalton said about starting his company. "Basically my whole life has been (in the) gym and just any type of sport or athletics."
He came up with the name Mesomorphic after entering "athletic" into an online thesaurus. The search engine yielded his future brand name, which is an adjective describing a muscular body type.
"Once I saw that, it kind of clicked and I went with it from there," he said.
Symbolism in Dalton's new company goes beyond his athletic background. He chose a crown for the company logo in honor of his mother's family, whose last name is King. He said he had his late uncle, who passed away in 2004, in mind while designing the Mesomorphic logo.
"I figured that would be a really cool story behind the logo for the company and I could do a lot of cool things with crowns for designing the clothes," Dalton said. "My uncle was a pretty big influence in my life growing up, so that was something I could stick with."
Dalton spent his summer designing t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and wristbands. He designed a website, filled orders and shipped from his house. During what could be described as the most important summer of his life, Dalton said Mesomorphic Clothing did more than teach him the ins and outs of starting a new business.
"I didn't want it to be this huge thing right before trying to make the Olympic Team, but it did kind of keep my mind off gymnastics when I was outside the gym," he said. "I was trying to make sure I was still focused on gymnastics while I was having fun outside and keeping my mind on the company, too."
Mesomorphic Clothing features men's and women's t-shirts, tank tops, sweatshirts, hats and wristbands, but Dalton said he hopes to expand the brand soon.
"I eventually want to get some sweats, shorts, zip-up hoodies, things like that."
As Dalton finishes up the Kellogg's Tour of Gymnastics Champions in the coming weeks, his plate will be much less full, which will leave more time to focus on his new business and continue to learn.
"Something I've learned is that if you want to do it, you just have to grab ahold and do everything you can to make it work," he said. "Otherwise you're just going to be afraid to take risks the rest of your life."
