Forty-one TOPs athletes along with their coaches trained at the Olympic Training Center, August 8th – 11th, 2012. As the gymnasts lined up to start the camp, they were reminded that six to eight years ago, Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber were TOPs National Team members and that their Olympic journey started at the training center. The TOPs gymnasts are from across the United States and are eight to ten years old.
Camp director Valeri Liukin led the National Coaching Staff to work basics, TOPs National testing requirements and optional skills. All gymnasts participated in Physical Abilities testing just like National Team members.
The following gymnasts placed at the top of testing and were awarded medals for placement and commemorative USA Gymnastics Olympic pin sets:
- 1st: Carly Beeman, TIGAR Gymnastics, Wheat Ridge, Colorado
- 2nd: Layla Terrell, The Rock, Weatherford, Texas
- 3rd: Jess Douglas, TIGAR Gymnastics, Wheat Ridge, Colorado
The gymnasts trained twice a day. There were coaches lectures after each training session.
Most of these gymnasts will be back at the Training Center at the end of September for National TOPs testing. Several of the TOPs gymnasts were invited to the September Developmental Camp.
