The Level 9 Eastern and Western Championships are the competitive season's culmination event and include the best gymnasts in the country at this level. The Eastern Championships feature 16 age divisions and the Western Championships feature 8 age divisions, and the age divisions are determined by age and birth date. The Eastern Championships include top gymnasts from Regions 5-8 and the Western Championships includes top gymnasts from Regions 1-4. (The respective committees voted on the number of age divisions, which is why there are 16 for the Eastern Championships and 8 for Western Championships.)
The top six gymnasts in the all-around in each age division at the Eastern Regional Championships, and the top 12 in the all-around in each age division at the Western Regional Championships qualified to the Level 9 Eastern and Western Championships.
The Junior Olympic Eastern and Western Championships are two of USA Gymnastics' championships. Many Junior Olympic champions have gone on to make the U.S. National Team and represent the United States in international competition and/or to compete in collegiate gymnastics.
