More National Team Stories

At the age of 6, Sabrina Vega fell in love. After attending a friend's birthday party at a local gym, Vega knew she had fallen in love with the sport of gymnastics.

Not even six months later, Vega was in the gym and already competing as a Level 4 gymnast. Soon after her first season, she moved to Dynamic Gymnastics where she currently trains under 1976 Olympic silver medalist Teodora Ungureanu-Cepoi and Sorin Cepoi, a former Romanian Olympian, in Carmel, N.Y.

Under her coaches' training, Vega's love for gymnastics only continued to grow as she dedicated more time in the gym and made her way from a Level 5 in 2003 to a spot on her first U.S. National Team as a junior in 2008.

Collecting medals and titles along the way, Vega made a name for herself in her home state of New York and across the country. During her Level 9 season in 2007, Vega swept the golds at Regionals, collected all but one title at State Meet, and claimed the all-around and two individual event titles at Eastern Nationals. After testing to hopes pre-elite, she was invited to the National Training Camps that October and following January where she then moved up to a Level 10 for the 2008 season.

Vega didn't waste any opportunity to prove herself as she once again swept the competition at the Level 10 State Championships, finished second in the all-around, won three event titles at Regionals, and placed fifth on vault and beam at JO Nationals.

At the 2009 Junior Pan American Championships, she helped her team to a first-place finish and was second in the all-around and bars and fifth on beam. Vega won the floor exercise title at the 2009 Visa Championships in the junior division, where she was also third on beam and fourth in the all-around and uneven bars.

In 2010, Vega was a member of the U.S. Pan American Championships team that won the team gold medal, and she also won the balance beam gold medal and the all-around silver medal. At the Pacific Rim Championships, she took second on beam in the junior division and was part of the gold-medal team. Vega was second on floor and seventh in the all-around at the 2010 Visa Championships in the junior division.

Competing as a senior in 2011, Vega hasn't stopped chasing her dreams to one day making the Olympic team. So far this year, she has claimed the bronze medal in the all-around at the CoverGirl Classic, and was fourth in the floor exercise and fifth in both the all-around and balance beam at the Visa Championships.

Not even a month later, Vega was announced to the World Championships team to compete in Tokyo, Japan, in October of this year. And to Vega, this proved to not only be one of her highest accomplishments, but as reassurance that she is headed in the right direction.

"Making the World Championships team is just a step closer to my big dream of making the Olympic team," Vega said. "It was just amazing hearing my name announced as part of this team. It was overwhelming."
