Holiday Plans and Traditions

By Luan Peszek

The holiday season is upon us! USA Gymnastics asked members of the men's and women's national teams which holiday they celebrate, their traditions and memories, the best present they've ever received, and what they're asking for this year. Here are their responses.

DYLAN AKERS: I'm all about Christmas. We'll probably have my sister and brother home so we can celebrate together. I usually love everything I get. Hopefully, I'll get something cool.

WYATT AYCOCK: My family and I celebrate Christmas. I will spend time with my family (parents and grandparents) and my girlfriend's family. My most memorable gift was a drum set when I was 11. I hope to get a new computer this year to use when I go to college.

REBECCA BROSS: I celebrate Christmas. I believe the best present I ever received was my iPod. I am going to ask for a car this year!

ALEX BUSCAGLIA: I celebrate Christmas and I plan to go home to Chicago for Christmas and celebrate with my sister, her fiance, aunts, uncles, and cousins. I don't think I have a most memorable gift. Every Christmas, our family goes through the presents one at a time, one person at a time (unlike a lot of other families that have pandemonium). I really enjoy being in the moment when we are going around the room, laughing and admiring other presents. That is most memorable to me.

KAITLYN CLARK: We celebrate Christmas with my family - Mom, Dad, brother Matt, sister Bree and brother Kyle. We go to my grandparents' on Christmas Eve and celebrate with them and have a big dinner, open gifts and then go to midnight mass at church. My favorite gift was my laptop and Zune player. I'm hoping for an iPhone this Christmas. We have many traditions but one that I will remember forever is our annual Christmas card photo shoots. My mom comes up with crazy photo ideas for our Christmas cards. Needless to say, we never have a traditional card and all of our family and friends look forward to what she comes up with every year. This year is a secret; she has something planned. It is always so much fun to see what we have to do.

JAKE DALTON: We celebrate Christmas, and the best present I ever got probably was snowboarding passes. My plans this year will include spending time with my family in Reno.

SOPHINA DEJESUS: I celebrate Christmas. My favorite gift last year was my camera and my G1 cell phone. This Christmas we are planning to go do a little snow skiing. My sister and I love to ski! We will celebrate this Christmas with my immediate family. My most memorable gift was my motor scooter. It was a beautiful blue and it went really fast! There is no particular thing that I want. I like when my mom and dad surprise me. I just like to spend time with all my family and catch up with everyone.

WES HAAGENSEN: I celebrate Christmas, and will be traveling back to Belleville, Ill., to spend time with my grandparents, Wayne and Judy, my Aunt Veva, and my Cousin Matthew. Usually we open up one present on Christmas Eve, and then open up the rest of our presents on Christmas morning. I would say my all time best present was when I got my first car. It was a Birthday/Christmas present since my birthday is December 21, and that was a very exciting time. This year I just want to have some good family time with everyone back home, because I haven't been able to make it back home except once since I moved to Colorado this past January. This upcoming year, I will just be training and competing. I'm already starting to prepare for the Winter Cup in February, and after that, I hope to get some good international assignments.

IVANA HONG: My whole family will hopefully be in Texas to celebrate Christmas together. Some of our friends may come down to visit also. That is always exciting!

JONATHAN HORTON: We definitely celebrate Christmas. I love Christmas and my family always gets really psyched up for this time of year. Although we love to give and receive gifts, my family just really enjoys getting to spend time together. I think this year for Christmas we are going to try to spend Christmas Eve with my family and then we will be driving to Dallas on Christmas morning to celebrate with Haley's family for a few days.

ALAINA JOHNSON: I celebrate Christmas. I am staying in my hometown this year, Tyler, Texas. My brother, Chris, who goes to school at the University of Alabama, will be coming home and my sister, Bethany, who lives in Columbia, S.C., will be coming home. I don't have anything that I want right now for Christmas. I'm just glad that my family will all be together for the holiday.

MADISON KOCIAN: Our family celebrates Christmas the weekend before Christmas Day at my grandparents'. I get to see my cousins, uncles, aunts and grandparents. On Christmas Eve, we go to church with our family in Dallas and celebrate on Christmas Day by opening our gifts and eating lots of good food. I enjoy spending time with our family and friends on Christmas Day by playing games, talking and hanging out.

MATTIE LARSON: My family celebrates Christmas and we usually keep it small and celebrate at home, including this year. I remember going through a phase when I was younger of only being happy to get big boxes and not even caring what was in them. I also remember when I was really young I spent a Christmas in New York and then we went to visit a family friend in Florida and she surprised us by throwing us a second Christmas. I usually don't know what I want for Christmas until right after it is over and I see what my friends got and I want the same thing. My parents have gotten used to the pattern so they usually just give me gift cards.

STEVEN LEGENDRE: I celebrate Christmas, and it is by far my favorite holiday. My all-time favorite gift has been a dirt bike I got when I was 9, which started my lifelong interest in motorcycles. My plans for this year are to spend as much time with my family as possible. I also hope to see my girlfriend Alaina Williams (trampolinist) as it is one of the few times we will both have some time off. I can't wait!!

DANELL LEYVA: My family celebrates Christmas. The best gift I ever received was definitely my first Playstation. I had wanted a Playstation for about a year and a half and I got it on Christmas! As far as this year, I don't know. I never really ask for anything.

NASTIA LIUKIN: We celebrate Christmas and New Year's. In Russia, New Year's is one of the most important holidays. It's tradition to spend it with your family and closest friends. Christmas in 2007 will be one I will always remember. My mom got really sick and was in the hospital and in the intensive care unit for almost a week. She got released on Christmas Eve, so we were able to spend it together at home. Since then, every Christmas has been important to us to spend together as a family.

TIM MCNEILL: I'm really excited to go home for Christmas this year! I haven't been back to Virginia since last Christmas so it's been way too long. I think the Christmas gift that I'll always remember is a Super Nintendo when I was a little kid. It was the first video game system I ever got - certainly not the last though. This year I am going to ask for an external hard drive for my computer so I can keep all of my movies and TV shows in one place.

SAMANTHA PESZEK: Being Catholic, my family definitely celebrates Christmas, which is my personal favorite holiday! This year, my family is doing something a little unique. Since my dad's side of the family lives in Chicago and Arizona, we are all meeting in Wisconsin and staying in a big cabin. We are planning to go snowmobiling! From what I hear, the weather is brutally cold, so I'm kind of nervous for that and the long drive, but I can't wait to see my family! I'm not sure what I am going to ask for yet --I love surprises!

CAMERON ROGERS: My family celebrates Christmas. This year we will probably stay home for the holidays and spend time with each other and the extended family. With all of our hectic schedules it is nice just to have some down time with the family. The most memorable gift I have ever received was a trip to Europe in the eighth grade. I saved up for the trip for several years, and that year my entire family gave me money to help me pay for it. That trip to Europe is a trip I will always remember. This year I haven't really decided what I want. Since I am going off to college next year, I will probably ask for stuff for my dorm room or maybe some college apparel.

SAMANTHA SHAPIRO: In the past, my family has gone to Mammoth Mountain over Christmas. We have not made plans yet for this winter so I'm unsure if we will be going to the mountains or if we will have a "staycation" and do something special and fun in Los Angeles. It is such a treat to get a break from school and just have some time to chill with friends. For me, the holidays are about being with family and friends. The best gift would be a healthy year in 2010 for my grandma.

BRIDGET SLOAN: We celebrate Christmas twice, once in Illinois before Christmas with my relatives and on Christmas Day at home with my parents, sister and brothers. Two of my best Christmas gifts - when I was 4 or 5 I got a Barbie that came with a dog that walked and last year my family got a German short-hair puppy, Lillie.

JORDAN VALDEZ: This year for the week of Christmas I'm going back to Colorado for about a week. I'm looking forward to getting back to Colorado to see all of my friends and family. Usually my Christmas is split into a celebration with my dad and one with my mom, but I'm sure this year will be slightly different since I'll only be in town for a short time. My most memorable gift was from my parents when I was younger. They got me a new bike and my eyes lit up and I went crazy. They even let me ride the new bike around the house! This year I'm just looking forward to being with everyone. Any gift I would receive is just a bonus on top of that.

JORDYN WIEBER: We Celebrate Christmas. We usually go to church and out to dinner with friends on Christmas Eve. Then my brother and sisters and I all exchange gifts. My most memorable gift I ever received for Christmas was my first digital camera a few years ago. This year I hope to get a Juicy Couture outfit.

KAYLA WILLIAMS: We celebrate Christmas. The best present I have ever gotten was probably my camera last year because I'm interested in photography and the camera is very good. This year I think I'll probably just ask for some money for a shopping spree!
