The Pan American Games welcome athletes from all over the American continent to participate in an international celebration of friendship and sports. Held every four years, in the year before the Olympic Games, it represents the largest contingent of Team USA athletes to compete in an international sporting event, with approximately 650 U.S. athletes.
Guadalajara will be the host of the 2011 Pan American Games. Guadalajara is a city in western Mexico, the capital of the state of Jalisco and the second largest city in the country. It is located in the center of Jalisco, in the geographical zone known as the Atemajac Valley.
Mexico will host the Pan American Games for the third time (1955, 1975 and 2011), but this is the first time that the host city is not the capital of the country.
