Waller won a USA Gymnastics or NCAA national title every year from 1989-1993; however, he was unable to compete at the 1994 Coca-Cola National Championships and did not complete the competition in 1995. He was an all-around finalist at the 1992 Olympic Games and took fifth on pommel horse, only one tenth of a point away from the gold medal. The 1991 U.S. National Champion, Waller was selected the 1991 Athlete of the Year by his national teammates. Waller was married to Cindy Olkoski, a former gymnast and cheerleader, on June 19, 1993. They had their first child, Alexandra, on Jan. 4, 1995. Cindy and Chris filmed a Levi's commercial together and were featured in Levi's shorts print advertisements in 1994. Waller comes from a family of many athletes-his father was a member of the German junior ski team, his brother Rolf was a member of the U.S. junior national ski team, and his other brother Kurt was a scholarship gymnast at Northern Illinois University and a stunt man. A former Illinois high school state champion, Waller underwent heart surgery to correct a defective aorta valve while still in high school. He currently competes with a 5% deficient valve. Waller is currently on the USA Gymnastics Board of Directors Athlete's Council.
