Garry qualified to his first World Championships in 1996 by taking second all-around at the Winter Cup Challenge. Denk's future goal is to run/direct a corporate fitness center of a total fitness center (gymnastics, weightlifting, aerobics, rock climbing, etc.). His sister, Shannon, also was a gymnast through high school and a cheerleader at the University of Iowa. His parents, Gerry and Julie, are owners of the gym where he trained before entering the University of Iowa. U.S. Olympic Festival was his favorite competition. He played high school soccer, but chose to focus on gymnastics due to schedule conflicts.
