USA Gymnastics Board of Directors
Vidmar is a professional speaker who has given more than 1,000 presentations on risk-taking, innovation and quality to the USA's top corporations and associations, as well sales, marketing and management audiences. He has worked as a journalist at the Olympic Games and as a gymnastics television commentator. Vidmar has also published several books and articles.
At the 1984 Olympic Games, Vidmar helped the U.S. men claim their only team gold medal in history and won a second gold medal on the pommel horse with a perfect 10.0 score. His all-around silver medal made him the first U.S. man to medal in the all-around at the Olympic Games. He also earned a team bronze medal at the 1979 World Championships. His U.S. titles include the all-around in 1980 and 1982, as well as winning the all-around at the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials. Vidmar won five NCAA titles and was a 19-time All-American.
In addition to his position on USA Gymnastics' Board of Directors, Vidmar is the vice chairman of the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports; vice chairman of the Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games; chairman of Ready, Set, Gold Program, which brings more than 50 Olympians into more than 50 public schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District to regularly visit students; and vice president of the Orange County Youth Sports Foundation, which provides scholarships, sports equipment, and outreach for young people who might otherwise lack opportunities. His past commitments include: U.S. Olympic Ambassador Program (2007-08); co-chairman, U.S. Olympic Committee Summer Sports Summit (2001-04); President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (1989-92); Board of Directors and Executive Committee, as well as chairman of the Athletes Advisory Council, USA Gymnastics (1985-92 and 1996-2000); and Board of Directors and Executive Board, U.S. Olympic Committee (1985-87).
Vidmar was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1991 and USA Gymnastics' Hall of Fame in 1997. The 1984 U.S. Olympic Team for men's gymnastics was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 2006. He also is a member of: National Fitness Leaders Hall of Fame (1993); UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame (1994); International Gymnastics Hall of Fame (1998); and National Speakers Association CPAE Hall of Fame (2005).
Vidmar, a native of Los Angeles, graduated from the University of California, Los Angles, with a BA in economics. He resides in San Clemente, Calif., with his wife Donna, a former UCLA gymnast. They have five grown children. He is an avid cyclist, runner, and surfer who has participated in several marathons and Ironman half and full triathlons.
Peter Vidmar, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was named chairman of USA Gymnastics Board of Directors in December 2008 and re-elected in December 2012 for a second term. In November 2012, Vidmar was elected to the Executive Committee of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).
